Look this is sort of embarrassing. I'd asked Tyche if she would be free to go to St Mungo's Gala as a friend as my plus one with the tickets Antonin offered me. She is, apparently, dating Odysseus and understandably declined.

Harry are you still dating Katie? I don't want to step on your toes or create another horribly awkward situation by asking someone who's actively dating. Do you think she'd be interested, as a friend?

I assume both of you have your own invitations, but if Katie doesn't work out do you know someone else who might be interested in going with a friendly, not-a-date, escort? Socially I'm like I just spotted the snitch at the very other end of the pitch.

In part I'm floundering on who to ask that I'm not going to have to watch every other word with. I'm already going to be at home and not able to talk about well anything important there. I know it's in public so no real political discussion anyway, but I'd like a friendly evening to be friendly. Where I don't have to worry about the person I'm with spouting off that I'm an idiot squip for not knowing she's dating and then an offhand mention of the family's 'mudblood' picking up her dress tomorrow... not thinking about what anything she just said meant.

I can see that, yes.

It's sort of funny, because I've been thinking about who to go with too. I'm in a tricky place with Lucius right now, who's still very angry at what I did with the Weasley venture. I think I hurt his feelings a bit more than I'd realised, and he's taking it quite personally, and along with all that is lecturing me about my associates that he disagrees with.

So even though I think it'd be a lot of fun to bring along Ron or Sally-Anne or George, it'd be problematic given that he'd take it as an insult. And Sally-Anne's working anyways, and this might make her father angry, so I don't want to push things.

It's all an enormous bother, because I just want to go to a ball and have a good time, but with all these other things hanging over my head, it's more complicated than that.

And I've had a bit more practise at watching what I say, but you're right, it can be exhausting.

I'm not going to try to steal Katie away from you Harry, even if you are casual that's more of a relationship with her than I have. I was just looking to ask as a friend.

We've talked about it, her and me. Not making it too serious. Like if she had someone else ask her, she knows it'd be okay if she really wanted to go with them, and I wouldn't be angry or anything.

I guess right now, it's good for both of us to go to these sort of things with each other, because I have someone I know I can ask who won't make a big deal out of it, and she thinks it's pretty fun, and it doesn't hurt her standing.

I mean, I like her. And I think she likes me. And we have a good time together. She's really funny, and she doesn't treat me like I'm going to explode or something.

But if we took it more serious than just going to dances every now and then or watching quidditch, it might get so she feels obligated instead of just like it's a good time.

Which is all to say you could ask her, if you wanted.
